The AirTran purchase mostly gave access to a bunch of 737 orders at really good prices, and access to a few airports like DCA and LGA. It gave Southwest a foothold in ATL, but they have chosen to go compete competitively with Delta.
I don't see any airline out there right now that gives Southwest anything they can't just build themselves. Picture could be different if an airline gets really cheap.
