They are always severely short. I'm sure it is at least partially a business choice to stay as lean as possible and not up the pay enough to get the amount of instructors currently needed, but something needs to change to stop their issues from being a big issue for us. If we aren't going to do all our own training, we should at least get some pilots from every fleet trained up to teach the sim in times of need. Maybe this should be a part of the job for all the Check Airmen. I get that we are insanely short right now, but as we keep adding airframes and plan on hiring another 450 or so pilots this year, we are still waiting on the vast majority of the pilots hired last year to get on line to help out. If they aren't getting through at a reasonable rate, then something has to change.
