If you go on Delta net and into crew resources the archived communication for July of 2018 explains why they suspended hiring. You can choose to believe it or not but essentially they stated they over hired and had about 500 extra pilots. They said they had overhired because the massive changes in widebody flying with the retirement of the 747, increased 777 flying and on boarding the 350 required extra pilots to cover that transition which was ending. We were actually offering summer SIL’s which bears out the surplus. Even given the break in hiring we brought on 530 or so pilots that year.
