As far as I'm aware, there's no limit on how far you can live from your base, as long as you can be there for your airline on day 1 of your rotation. From what I understand, our bases are based on pax throughput, so if you only have a handful of airline flights per day, I wouldn't plan on it becoming a base. I know plenty of people here that drive 2-3 hours to their base. That said, your duty time on day 1 starts an hour before your airline, so you'll need to take that into consideration. If you start your drive 4 hours before your airline to arrive at the airport, park, take a shuttle to the terminal, get through KCM, etc, that could potentially be 19 hours from the time you wake up to the time you duty off, if you get used for a full 14 hours on day 1. Nothing major, and I know plenty of guys that do it, but just something to consider. Also, sometimes on day 1 you'll be put on reserve at residence which just means you're on reserve sitting at home. Dispatch understands we have pilots that live varying distances from their bases, so I'd imagine it would be nothing more than a call to dispatch the night before saying that you need X hours notification before an airline, but worst case scenario they might get you a hotel in your base to go sit at if they think they might be using you and want you closer to the airport.
