It may rarely happen to you as an individual, but I assure you it happens constantly on a daily basis to the pilot group as a whole. Early spring 3 other crew members and myself were sent to the short in TPA we had no rooms after a hour and half wait. All the while 3 of us were on hold trying talk with scheduling. The manager of the hotel (not our crew scheduling) helped us set up alternate rooms at a competing hotel, and then gave us a ride there. This after being told at the airport by our scheduling to go to the short stay and we had reservations... not. We got into our rooms about 2.5 hours after block in. I've had similar situations happen twice this spring.
