On long call you can do anything you want. You are not even obligated to answer the phone. Just check your schedule or phone often enough that you could always report within a rolling 12 hours. If you live 3 hours away you only need to check every 9 hours. Many do what you mention on short call. They drive to be within a reasonable distance.
