Well when PSA first got them they weren’t strict, then all on one day a bunch of pilots jepp apps crashed.
Come to find out it was so old the apple certificate expired for that version. Come to find out they couldn’t download the new one because their IOS is so far out of date.
The company purchased iPads for everyone and so many literally ran until failure they couldn’t just discipline those pilots, so they set a strict policy for everyone.
I doubt any checkpilot would balk at you if you tell them you didn’t touch it during rest and will never touch it during rest, and show to the gate 45 prior to update it and plan to go down the bridge 35 prior with an updated iPad. If your on it your on it, if your unaware your unaware.
You can worry about it during rest and update it on duty, or do it on rest and not worry about it on duty they wouldn’t care.
For me, worrying is more disruptive to rest than the task of updating it.
