It doesn't. A stock is an instrument of equity. A bond is an instrument of debt. Sometimes the term "penny-stock" is used to refer to a stock that is trading below a certain price. However, to be technically correct, this term would probably be a misnomer in the case of MAG.

For what it's worth, I'd much rather be holding Mesa bonds than stock right now! (But am glad to not have either.)

Stockholders would get zip in BK...bond holders might get something. Maybe.
