Coming off a soft day off scheduling can assign a trip reporting as early as 10 hours after the start of LC as long as it is on your schedule by 9 hours prior to the start of LC. So for your standard midnight start you can report as early as 10AM if they put it on your schedule by 1500 the day prior. When this happens the pilot is responsible to know if they have been given and assignment and scheduling will not contact the pilot.
It sounds like it was assigned after Long call had already started. Not the day prior. I took it as he started long call last night and then woke up this morning and a trip was on his schedule without a call from scheduling.
