It can be handy when maneuvering the bag around. Like put it on the floor and then use the handles to slide it into that 737 cubby slot. Or putting it into/out of the car.
It's also nice in the hotel room to put your bag on the fold out bag holder thing so it's off the floor.
It's not necessary, but I do use it, and it doesn't get in the way. I wasn't 100% sure if I'd use it, but I do.
