Accrual is the same for everyone at 60 hours per year, and I *think* newhires get 30 hours deposited at 6 months in. For the time I've been here (about a decade), there's been a culture of using sick for any reason at any time without worry of a phone call, let alone any disciplinary action. I wouldn't worry even on your (ahem, your friend's) probationary year.
