A furloughed pilot maintains his seniority and can still maintain his seniority accrual. So if you were a 3yr FO when furloughed and are gone for a year then when you come back you could be paid at 4th year status. Sorry to break it to you.

Tell that to my first year ONT FO buddy who's doing
precisely that. Not everyone's first job was as a regional FO or broke CFI. Other people I know have decided to take the COLAs to go pursue other interests other than being a regional FO and help build that nestegg.
