Why are there in base layovers?
For soft time trip credit leveling.
Without in-base layovers:
1-day trip BOS-IAH-BOS pays ~8 hours
3-day trip BOS-PHX-BOS commutable both ends. Block is less than 12 hours, pays 15 hours.
Total for both trips credit 23 hours
With in-base layovers:
4-day trip.
Day one BOS-IAH-BOS, layover.
Days 2-4 BOS-PHX-BOS
4-day trip pay 20 hours.
Saves the company 3 hours soft time.
