A gen failure isn't a land immediately thing if the apu gen comes on line. Been there done than... Just have to calculate the extra fuel burn of the apu en route and make sure you still have proper reserves.
Had a flight this summer where eng 1 Gen was deferred and APU died at FL410. Turns out contract mx never topped off the APU oil when they deferred the eng gen and it ran bone dry. Would’ve found a better place to divert but we were middle of nowhere AZ so going back to PHX was closest. 🫣. Sked wanted us to take it back out after they topped off the APU oil…I said that plane is going to the hangar to get fixed or they can find someone else.
