It wouldn't be crazy to think Airbus is definitely motivated to keep their foot as far into the door at United as they can. While United's 321 deliveries seem small compared the 737 deliveries, the A321 deliveries alone are larger than most other airlines in the world.

Airbus has a backlog of 5+ years for their 320 family. Even if Spirit went belly up they would auction off those delivery slots to the highest bidder. Airbus has very little motivation to cut UAL a deal for 321 unless there is a WB order attached to it
You're assuming Spirit's slots are assignable by Spirit. They might not be.
