I wasn't expecting it to be in the first for flying category. Does that mean if you select that as your only option you will be called before anybody else in the lower days available grouping, regardless of seniority?

From my understanding, this only helps you if there is a 3-day trip you like more than the available 4-day trips. Your YS for the 3-day would be considered just like any other YS in the 3-day pot, so if someone more senior YS-ed the trip you wanted, then it will go to them.
The preference to subtract one day from your availability is only in the "First to fly" template, along with the ability to reduce your RAW bucket from 2 to 1, if that situation applies. It is not available in the "If needed to fly" template.
