FO pulls the spoilers and looks away for a second and before he knows it, the speed is below the UP bug. CA called for Flaps 5, they got them out and the rest was uneventful.
If that’s really what happened, it absolutely blows my mind she called the FAA. Had something very similar happen to me jumpseating home on an RJ. Captain got distracted/busy, FO (on OE) got slow. I said “watch your airspeed,” they fixed it, and 2 minutes later I had pretty much forgotten about it. The idea to call the FAA (or anyone for that matter) about something like that seems so ridiculous to me that I have to believe there’s more to this particular case. If there isn’t, then I don’t know what to say. It was nothing more than a simple error that got trapped, and still had at least a couple more levels of redundancy to go before they fell out of the sky.
