This article is a little misleading. There is no reason the FO couldn’t fly—in training we routinely will transfer controls and delegate tasks. The issue is the landing. Company policy says captain does it. I believe in this case he decided against that. That being said I don’t know enough other details.
He didn’t get canned just for the FO landing. It’s been a long string of “stuff”. The guy in question is super nice and friendly. It’s just that he’s also really adept at getting himself in trouble and there’s been a whole string of events throughout the last 20 years.
