Wide body domestic routes are a useful way of moving aircraft around the system for maintenance or other reasons. It is not uncommon for MELs to restrict aircraft from flying ETOPS, so moving that WB aircraft to another base via a domestic flight and then send it "deep south" (which is not ETOPS) for a week until the MEL gets cleared us incredibly beneficial.

Sometimes the domestic legs are not big profit generators, but help in other ways.
