Wear the tie for your first checkride at a new airline. Once you're on you'll never have to wear it again. I have heard more than one APD give a guy grief for not wearing one, however those same ones will tell you to take it off later after the introductions usually. I've never understood guys who think having to wear a tie is the worse thing in the world. Grow up. Are they one of the most pointless, ridiculous pieces of clothing ever devised by man? Yes. But most professionals wear them and if you tie it right and know how to buy a shirt that is the right size, then they are just sort of there. Oh, and just because you take your tie off in the cockpit does NOT mean you are a cool guy.
