Weren’t people being targeted for the simplest things last time during contract negotiations? Being “fired” for calling out sick, etc.? If I were brand new to the company and it was my very first 121 job ever, I would feel like I was painting a target on myself wearing a union lanyard or worse yet a strike lanyard. Everyone is free to do whatever they like, but accosting someone for not wearing a union lanyard when they are flying a jet for the first time just trying not to screw up is pretty insensitive.
Nobody has ever gotten fired or had a target put on their back for wearing a union lanyard. The company doesn't give a crap. Fellow pilots, do in fact care. I would much rather be wearing my own lanyard, but during negotiations when the union wants to show solidarity, I wear the union lanyard. For all those pilots off of probation, wear the lanyard. For the new hires, wear whatever you want.
