I wasn’t personally involved with that but after hearing the details the union didn’t have a lot of options to defend with. This would be a challenge for the union and a probationary pilot irregardless of negotiations.
Yup, there's even more to the story BUT the record was that the company DID axe two pilots for sick time abuse when negotiations got sporty.
