Best recommendation right now:
Fly your butt off in the most complex aircraft you can find a job flying. Hours are always a plus - at least the first 6-8 thousand. Better if they are MEI and/or turbine. PIC preferred over SIC
Second best recommendation:
Keep in contact with those you have previously flown with who have already moved on. Their recommendations will help you get to the next level.
Third recommendation: Don't "distinguish" yourself in any negative way. Like DUIs, speeding tickets, tattoos in any areas visible outside a long sleeve shirt, controversial social postings, weird haircuts, beards, etc., etc.
