You are correct. I looked at the old contract. UAL gets 6 hours of accrual per bid period. We can non rev while sick. Did it more than once. You do however need permission. Never denied once in 35 years.
Flew with an FO who broke his collar bone. Was denied permission to non rev to visit family. Had to buy a ticket. Your perspective from yesteryear is irrelevant.
