We (AA) can call a chief to get out of a trip if needed, but that's usually for something well in advance like a wedding, etc...anything inside of a few days out and the expectation is to just bang in, regardless of the reason behind it. Yes it's called sick time but I don't understand how they can expect you to only use it when you're sick unless you have some other kind of banked PTO process I'm unaware of?
We have a similar process; however, it's case-by-case. I have never heard of a situation where the CPO won't help, but I would imagine if you were someone who did this often, it could raise some questions. I agree with you, sick time is sick time; the reasons behind the sick call should be irrelevant. This sick time is time you earned and is part of your compensation package.
