Commuting to captain after 6 or 8 years is better than having to wait for 10-12 years for first available. I know that doesn't make you feel a whole lot better, but just saying try to keep that in perspective and maybe it won't suck quite as bad.
In the meantime, it would be nice if the company would build some lines that start with deadheads for a while and at least split the pain between labor and management.

Disagree. This is obviously base specific, but I’d take a downgrade and sit at the top 15% of the FO list, flying turn lines, getting better vacations, and premium versus commuting to hold a crappy CA reserve or blank line, and eating all the costs and time away from home associated with commuting.
A senior FO (living in base) can net just as much money as a commuting CA with very little effort.
