The Presidio in San Fran is a great course. Harding park is nice as well but more expensive and harder to get on. The muni in Charleston is worth the trip although the rental clubs are pretty sad. I really liked the muni across the river from our Portland, OR layover hotel.
As somebody previously mentioned PUJ resort has a good course that is technically free although they charge a cart fee ranging from $30-60.
Thanks for the CHS and SFO leads. The PDX course (I assume you are talking about Heron Lakes, used to be called Delta Park when built), I have played since being a kid. Its conditions ebbs and flows with who is running the city municipal services.
When I had the rentals from the Naval Academy, they were cheap, but was a set put together from a few other partial sets. The 56deg wedge looked like they had fished it out of a lake after a decade.
