I've certainly heard of the same thing happening, where effectively the company 'waives' the 2-week notice for active work at their sole discretion (though I'm not sure how that impacts pay).

I'm just saying you are playing with fire if you are counting on that, even with some evidence of precedent, And, that it's not worth 2 weeks of pay. YMMV.
