Nobody thinks they treat their employees or customers well. They just sell super cheap stuff.
First of all, Nordstrom, Macys and even JC Pennys do NOT sell the same items as Ross (JC Penny's does a little). Nordstrom sells HIGH END designer merchandise that are both NEW/CURRENT and checked for quality. Much of their clothing is worn for status and not simply as covering.
Second, some Ross items may look similar but are usually late/last year's inventory, are mis-sized or irregularly constructed and are otherwise more cheaply made. There are some items that, despite being last year's model, are still acceptable to many (like socks, underwear, housewares, etc.). And, where did you get they treat their customers poorly?
Third, an airline seat is an airline seat. F9 doesn't offer some "watered down" version of their product anymore. UA, AA, DL all offer their same seat (w/ wifi, club access, etc.) to their loyalty customers at prices not much more than F9.
But, your point is taken. Maybe it doesn't apply to ALL markets, but it does apply to most. Most businesses that treat their customers and employees badly don't do well for long periods of time. I guess Ross (and probably some others) are the exception - mostly due to their market.
