It was all about him stroking his ego by pretending to be a 757 captain several years ago (with an LCP in the right seat at all times). I doubt he’s flown in years.
Well, there is more to that story though. JL became the VP of Flt Ops literally a month before Covid for one reason, and one reason only.
He was the same pay scale/step as Jim G, who was unceremoniously fired in the wake of the fallout from the KP lawsuit. JG and JL literally swapped jobs (“Safety” being the other job). Why? Because the fecal matter was about to hit the rotary oscillator via the Judge, and JG was going to look realllly bad. And since no one was getting ‘promoted’, it didn’t require Board approval to get JG out of the way, so when it hit the press he wasn’t in the job.
Then, someone pointed out the FAA certificate
requires the VP of Flt OPs be an ATP rated pilot on the SL. Uh oh! So, to fix that, Suddenly Pat B was named a made-up position as “system chief pilot”, and the FAA POI signed off on that as a ‘fix’.
Covid hit a month later, and JL was neck deep in it. Almost felt sorry for him, he seemed so unprepared from a pilot standpoint. (Though he does have a PPL with a 777 type, no joke).
The SVP doesn’t necessarily have to promote from within, but they must be an ATP.
