I dunno man, there's interesting dynamics all around the world of migrant workers who do those sorts of schedules and worse. That's what I would chalk this sort of thing up to. It's not something I'd ever want for myself, but millions of people do that sort of thing every day. I flew with a dude who met his (now) wife in China when he was working for another carrier. She is Filipino and was working as a house cleaner on an 11 month on / 1 month off schedule. They live in the equivalent of crashpads. It's not that much different than the lifestyle some FAs live.
Go on a cruise and talk to some of the workers. They’re away from their families up to 9 mos a year. Some parents both work in the industry and have family take care of their kids. They’re making a lot more than they could back at home so you adapt and make it work. Similar to how we’ll spend 2 mos away from home for a type rating. Or do 10-14 day trips. Or miss birthdays, anniversaries, etc for the job. Nothing is ideal (I wouldn’t want to spend 80 hrs a week in an office).
