Widebody lines are generally pretty commutable. Widebody reserve less so, but there are ways to manipulate things in your favor. But if your goal is just chill at home ... commute stress is a great way to kill that.
Widebody reserve is GENERALLY less chaotic than NB because the typical 2 leg trip structure is much more stable than NB work.
As for "how long to hold" - fundamentally wrong question. It's what % company seniority to hold. That metric tends to be pretty stable. How long to get to that point swings wildly. Recent awards have landed around 65%, or about 6000 off the bottom. That's about 10 years of retirements. General airline growth, 787 fleet growth, 756 retirement will likely see 2026 hires in ORD 787 before 2036.
