The US announced the United States' withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), on May 8, 2018. In its original format, the JCPOA provided a buffer with a 15-Year Sunset, along with a host of monitors on site, would have been in effect until January 16, 2031. Not the best agreement made… but at least monitors in place along with constraints on uranium enrichment and centrifuge production.
Although academic, at this point, on October 18, 2025, in the aftermath of the 12 Day war, with Israel, Iran officially announced the termination of the agreement after 10 years. Who knows… termination of the JCPOA may have been thwarted under different circumstances, if there were qualified knowledgeable adult experts on foreign policy matters at the table.
