There's probably a better reference, but I'll point to SRH pg 108:
"Immediately upon completing a short call period, a reserve pilot reverts to long-call status. There is no automatic or routinely required rest following a short call period."
This would mean that it would be a FAR 117 violation to report at 1730 after entering long call at 1600. You would need at least 10 hours of rest.
There's no mechanism that I know of to string-out a SC beyond it's originally assigned/awarded end.
Assign 1 crew member within their SC window knowing full-well crew member #2 who they have pegged to RR, assign on SC, GS, etc, won’t be able to make it inside your SC period. Boom. They were able to “assign you” outside (but inside) your window.
Legal? Yeah. Unethical and skirting the intent of the law? Hell yeah. Ask me how I know this happens.
Probably need some protection that states SC cannot be delayed to depart beyond 1 hour (or whatever) past the end of your SC window. Because it’s BS when it happens.
