Every airline I’ve flown at it was a huge no no with ALPA to volunteer for a jumpseat for an actual assigned rotation instead of having the company book you a seat in back per the contract.
The jumpseat exists for commuters, it’s not an extra seat for the company to assign on a full flight.

this is common knowledge for anyone that’s a commuter.. and usually the military folks are late to the party since they didn’t have fly at a previous 121. But again, “self deviate” so the pilot is doing it on his own and the company can’t claim ownership of the “legal rest” or booking him a DH in the jumpseat.
