Flip side of the coin is that AA barely made a profit in 2025. With the Iran conflict oil spikes it likely can’t afford to splurge on premium pay for all of its WOs and maintain profitability in 2026. Even AA’s regionals have 5k applicants and hiring to other majors is constrained and the market flooded with furloughed/laid off pilots. Getting rid of the extra pays won’t change staffing in the current hiring environment and will allow for a more profitable 2027. Losing a group of well paid regional pilots who resign or flow in protest won’t bother AA management in the slightest.
