Yes, you are correct, for awhile they did have to provide their own housing while going through training. Today, as the venerable Bruce Morey has stated, all newhire FOs are provided housing over at Willie Gateway. It is better than nothing and the accomodations there are plush compared to the luxurious Del Rio in Mesa...w/ fine dining/beverages provided from Groggys across the street.
The willy housing is inner-city project quality...it's better than the Del Rio only because the Del Rio is in the third-world slum league.
