This just doesn't add up to me. DHL already has a stake in Polar and uses them for long-haul lift. DHL has teamed up with Lufthansa to create a long haul carrier with 15 777Fs. Why would they pay a premium to UPS to do this flying all of a sudden when they have this other stuff going on?
If they are pulling out of the US domestic market, they certainly don't need a $1 billion contract with UPS. They can probably use commercial airlines to distribute much of their incomming int'l stuff once its here. The stuff which isn't next day air anyway.
Or look at it this way: DHL could transport, sort and deliver UPS freight to the rest of the world outside of the US.
