I knew when I was 18 and single that I would be the 1 out of 5000 who makes it to UPS, when the reality of life made me one of the other 4999 and looking at regional FO status for about 13 years if I don't bail soon.
You know what Iclendair, I started a reply for chrish and the guy with the nw airbus on his avatar but I erased it all. You've said best. They don't know. Why would someone who is actually doing what they are currently DREAMing of doing, telling them this isn't a good job and it's certainly not worth it?? For what we have to put up with, gone 2/3 of the month, 60K is NOTHING. Unless you live in a poor area of the country, 60K with a wife and kids is nothing more than lower middle class. That's not what you went to school for and sacrificed to become a pilot. And you will not get to 60K in less than 5 years. You will live in poverty untill then. We're not even talking about major salaries, assume you will NEVER get there. To compare civilian jobs with 1st or second year at a reputable major like Delta or UPS is just stupid and naive because you will probably never get there.
