Are first officers also bound by the seat-locks, or is it just the captains? Are there any hard and consistent provisions for releasing them?
This is really directed to the current lineholders and more experienced airmen on this thread. That being said, I am putting this out there so that the new hires and less experienced guys and gals can really understand. These questions are also thrown out there without any real preference of airframe...like so many of the rest of you, I'm just thrilled to fly.
Thanks in advance...and Happy Thanksgiving.
Seatlocks...
FO's locked from switching to another FO seat for 3 years.
However if you can upgrade to Captain in that time, you can.
Subject to companies whim to release the 3 year lock. I think the Seat lock clock just continues and is not reset. If you switch FO seats after the three years...I am not sure what the lock is. But I think you give up the chance to upgrade for a while, 1 year I think.
Captains are locked for 2 years from switching seats in upgrade (SAAB to 200). Subject to companies whim cause they have released some 200 seatlocks to fill 900 spots. If after those 2 years and a Captain bids a lower paying Captain spot (900 to SAAB), the Captain is locked. 1 year I think.
There is no lock for differences training for Captains (200 to 900) (not sure for FO's). The company has not released 200 FO locks. With the last vacancy the company released 6 or 7 200 Captain locks for 900 spots.
Another lock that is in effect is for the Flow through. After you meet the requirements for flow (Captain, x-number of years of service,...), you are locked in the your current position for two years after you upgrade.
So lets say you were a SAAB Captain before the date of the Flow LOA, you could flow when your date comes. If after that date an FO or existing Captain upgrades (SAAB to 200 or 900) there is a 2 year lock out from flow.
Now the lock doesn't exclude you from bidding for the flow. You bid for it. If you are awarded it, your class date will be listed for a class 2 years after your FED ride. If there is no class the bid will say something like "eligible after 11/09"
I think I got most of it correct. Others will correct this I am sure but this will get you started.
