There are plenty of landmarks. In fact, Flight Safety Academy in Vero Beach uses a named grid system. I asked our chief pilot a while ago to get a map of their grid names since they use the frequency more than any other school. I'll just call Flight Safety myself in the morning and have them fax it to us.

I would call them and ask them for a copy of their map. Then I would run it through my chain to *inform* them that I was going to start preaching this to my [your] students. Then, when in the area, if I heard another aircraft check on freq I would contact them and ask them where they were planning on working and/or tell them where I was working. If nothing else - over time it may just become standard practice because everyone is doing it.
