Not much news for the WSJ around the first of the year, so they found a "perfect storm" of a filler story. It has all the best of everything: weak economy, US will collapse, Soviets/Russians/KGB will swoop in.
Consider this..... Panarin is 50. He is dean of the Russian Foreign Ministry's academy for future diplomats. He is close to the central party, but not there yet. So, eight years ago, he dreams up a make or break way to get INTO the inner circle: tell everybody the USA will fail in 2010. That year is important because Panarin will be 52:. If his prediction comes true (even a year or two later), he will be hailed for his wisdom, and, being seasoned, but not too old, wlecomed to the central party.
