Sailing never said it was ATL (at least publicly). The guy could of been jumpseating to LAX, SLC, ATL, CVG or JFK. Or making a connection to get to work if it was an especially bad day.
Also, six months ago the schedules were a lot different than they are now. For example, DTW-JFK used to be 3 DC-9s a day - now it's all Compass.
I've been denied the jumpseat by a NWA Captain - not recently but it happened. The other jumpseater (who I was traveling with) was let on and said the FO apologized profusely when the CA left the cockpit to go to the lav and said it had been a difficult trip with that CA.
I will agree that 99% of the Captains are happy to have you on board, but it's not always the case.
