Heyas,

In my experience, when it's the under 25 guys that ask, it comes out more like "dude, I gotz ur Jmpseat, LOLZ".

The English Language...learn it, love it, live it.

Sailing never said it was ATL (at least publicly). The guy could of been jumpseating to LAX, SLC, ATL, CVG or JFK. Or making a connection to get to work if it was an especially bad day.

Also, six months ago the schedules were a lot different than they are now. For example, DTW-JFK used to be 3 DC-9s a day - now it's all Compass.

I've been denied the jumpseat by a NWA Captain - not recently but it happened. The other jumpseater (who I was traveling with) was let on and said the FO apologized profusely when the CA left the cockpit to go to the lav and said it had been a difficult trip with that CA.

I will agree that 99% of the Captains are happy to have you on board, but it's not always the case.

ia,

It's just that it is still a little difficult to believe. We here at Old NWA take our jumpseating seriously, since as it has been pointed out many time before a lot, if not most of us commute. While all pilot groups have their share of nuts, in my opinion, there is almost no way someone could get denied 3 times in 6 months by a few captains. But, if it is the case, we want to get to the bottom of it, becuase it is uncalled for. I apologize for your denied jumpseat. Let's make sure it never happens again.

New K Now (Willing to be the jumpseat police-I can spread the word quicker than you can blink an eye )

I understand - 3 times in a short time is a surprising amount.

When I jumpseat on one of the former NWA airplanes, the crew is happy to have me, if only so that they can quiz me on how the contract works at Delta or bidding or whatever. ;-)

Shoot, the other day I managed to answer 3 questions on the tram! I'm happy to answer and help our new airline move forward.

In all cases the Captain made the decision not the gate agent. In one case the Captain ranted and raved about how he got screwed by the Roberts award for 5 minutes before telling him he would not take him. These occurred prior to release of the new seniority list. This type of behavior is abhorrant and a direct contradiction of jumpseat policy.
Totally and completely unacceptable and unprofessional. The jumpseat should NEVER be used as a political tool or a bully pulpit. Sorry this happened.

You think this is bad? You should hear about what happened after AA bought TWA.

You think this is bad? This is nothing compared to what happened after AA bought TWA.

PS I don't think DL or NW is a culture of hate. But, AA sure as hell is!

Thank you Reddog !

You should always check in and ASK if you can jumpseat. I have seen CAs take jumpseaters back up into the jetway out of earshot of the FAs and pax and ream them out for not asking (and still let them on the flight however). We all should remember that jumpseating is a privilege, not a right. We don't have all the facts in this case and can't hear both sides so let's let our jumpseat committees do their jobs and sort out this alleged mess. Fly safe everyone.
Thank you JetFlyer for posting. You are absolutely correct and I've had an offline jumpseater do exactly that. His announcement that he had the jumpseat came as he was "building his nest" right behind me. Long story short, we had a long "chat" in the jetway and I let him ride in the middle seat of coach, even though there was one seat in front.

Jumpseating is a privilege, not a concessionary "right" defined by an agreement between carriers.

G'Day
