I doubt anyone over there lied to you. Having said that, I doubt they didn't know when or how many at least a few days ago. Believe it or not, there are things that happen between the GO and the MEC office that you might not fully understand or be privy to. But that doesn't mean that they're all trying to do the best thing for you they could.
