I've addressed this topic before.
FCIF is NOT an acceptable form of notification. Your obligation is to show AT showtime, and not a minute early.
Not five minutes early.
Not ten minutes early.
You have no duty to check FCIFs when you are off-duty. Check them after Showtime.
Parameters are published in the FOM for your particular aircraft.
If the flight plan wasn't good enough, it wouldn't be the flight plan.
If ATC needs me to alter my routing for his convenience, I'm more that happy to help. However, I will NOT be REQUESTING direct routing so I can get in the bed a couple of minutes early. I haven't requested direct anywhere since the Company went crying to the NMB, and I won't be requesting direct until they give us a ratifiable TA.
