Default Would a BS degree help getting airlines job?

Hi all, I'm a new member to the forum.
I've passion for flying. I am now in th eUS and finishing my BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. I'm planning to go for flight training once i start working fulltime. Would having a bachelor degree in engineering and having some years of work experience help me in getting jobs at the airlines at all? How should I go about flight training? I'm not really sure how many hour do i actually need to get my private. some school show 90-120 hours, some say 40-50 hours. I'm quite confused. I'm 23 right now. Is it too late for flight training? What is the preferred or average age for FO hiring? Thanks!
