I'm not a guard guy, but I know a little bit about it. It depends on the unit, but the two big things they generally look for in a hire off the street is what is your flying experience, and are you cool to hang with. You can have all the hours in the world, but if you are no fun to be around you are not likely to get a job. Remember, they are hiring you for life, (ideally) and they don't want to get stuck with a dud.
My advice? Bring donuts, pizza, or beer to the interview. Heck bring all three.
As for whether it's a good idea or not, its up to you. You will be in the military, but you will have a lot of say as to whether you deploy or not, where you go what you do. But remember, you will always be on the hook if a "real war" kicks off. You could be shot down and killed.
