It depends on the unit, but the two big things they generally look for in a hire off the street is what is your flying experience, and are you cool to hang with. As for whether it's a good idea or not, its up to you. You will be in the military, but you will have a lot of say as to whether you deploy or not, where you go what you do. But remember, you will always be on the hook if a "real war" kicks off. You could be shot down and killed. Not very likely, but it could happen and you need to be OK with that.
