Default National Guard

Hello

I am fairly new to the forums so forgive me if there is already an abundance of information on this topic already. I would just like to know what people think of joining the Guard to fly. I have already accomplished what I think is a lot in my flying career although I’m always looking for the next thing and I believe that is why I have gotten so far. At 22 I think I have some time to think about it, and please don’t judge me by my age those of you that know who I am know that I have a pretty sweet gig and have worked very hard to get it. Along with what you think of it, I would also like to know how hard it is to get into a unit and what are my chances? Any information you have would help.

Thanks.

I'm not a guard guy, but I know a little bit about it. It depends on the unit, but the two big things they generally look for in a hire off the street is what is your flying experience, and are you cool to hang with. You can have all the hours in the world, but if you are no fun to be around you are not likely to get a job. Remember, they are hiring you for life, (ideally) and they don't want to get stuck with a dud. My advice? Bring donuts, pizza, or beer to the interview. Heck bring all three.

As for whether it's a good idea or not, its up to you. You will be in the military, but you will have a lot of say as to whether you deploy or not, where you go what you do. But remember, you will always be on the hook if a "real war" kicks off. You could be shot down and killed. Not very likely, but it could happen and you need to be OK with that.

Herbivores crack me up. If you visit a fighter squadron, bring booze...preferably whiskey.

Jack Daniels, good scotch and cigars would work great in a fighter squadron. If you get an interview and end up late (which wouldn't be a good thing) bring the pizza and doughnuts as well...

Do they make a whiskey version of "The Weed" now?

Oh yeah, if you visit a fighter squadron be sure to yell "dead bug" at the top of your lungs. I'm serious, do it, they love that stuff....
