Airline flying is not a career anymore. It's a JOB. Just like an assembly line worker. Until such time as ALPA and the unions like Delta stop cowering in front of the airline execs, it'll stay that way.
Unfortunately, the people who make it far enough into flight training to benefit from what you've just said all have tunnel vision---and will only be able to learn the hard way. That's the problem with loving to fly...you're a sucker right up until you've sunk your time, money, and life into it.
